I’d like to recognize people we might not think about often enough – those who make our lives and our patients’ lives better every day.
Years ago, I had a heartfelt conversation with a despondent implant rep after he’d spent two full days gathering literature, studies and advice from clinical experts to help a doctor in a bind with a difficult case. He never realized or got recognition for the impact he had on providing ideal clinical care for a real patient. We discussed how he secured access to treatment that improved someone’s life.
It’s not about selling screws – it’s about caring and making a difference in the lives of
our patients and ourselves. This rep, then much younger, progressed to upper management at a global implant company and to this day encourages new reps to embrace and appreciate that their role is integral in helping people. I encourage all of us to recognize and foster those who have this potential.
After serving the Academy of Osseointegration on various committees, as a board member and ultimately as President, I only recently came to realize something profound: The AO staff – some who’ve been with us for 25 years – spend all their energy and expertise ensuring our profession moves forward with real education, true science and integrity. We don’t see these individuals on podiums or webinars, but they’re the people who allow others to shine and our profession to forge ahead in the right direction.
This year at our annual meeting in Washington, D.C. – the pinnacle meeting of implant dentistry – please take advantage of the opportunity to speak with the biggest names in our profession, shake their hands and share meaningful conversation. But also, show some love to those who work behind the scenes to make all this possible.
