AO leads the way in the development of clinical guidelines in implant dentistry
Over the years, the Academy of Osseointegration has been the leading force in organizing scientific summits which are designed to assess many of the clinical and evidence-based areas of advancement in implant dentistry. Each meeting concentrates focus on a main theme and various topics related to that theme are presented to and discussed by carefully selected scientists and clinicians, who ultimately participate in translational research to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice.
These resulting clinical and patient outcomes are used to assist in the development of definitive clinical guidelines to support AO members in daily practice. After final review, the definitive outcomes are published in the Academy’s scientific journal, The International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI).

SUMMIT REVIEWS
The 3-day 2024 AO/AAP Consensus Conference, was held in Chicago in August, 2024. The conference brought together global experts to debate issues surrounding peri-implantitis. The meeting was chaired by Drs. Hom-Lay Wang and Paul Rosen.
Clinical and scientific findings and summaries will be available soon in The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants.

The 3-day 2022 AO Summit: Controversial Trends, was held in Chicago in August of that year. The conference brought together global experts to debate three topic areas. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Joerg Neugebauer, AO Board director.
Prior to the conference, a series of preparatory meetings, working groups, and hard-working residents assembled to debate the three topics – 1)Flapless and Guided Surgery, 2) Ceramic Implants, and 3) Implant Abutment Connection. These groups crafted PICO questions as well as assemble and debate the relevant literature. These efforts resulted in a preliminary set of papers that were presented at the August meeting. Many authors were involved in this project, including young dentists in specialty training who were intentionally engaged to provide real-world experience with the professionals struggles around using best evidence to support patient care.
The driving question behind the purpose of this Summit, held August 8-10, 2018 in Oak Brook, IL, was to determine if there may be elevated risk factors attributable to local or systemic issues, suggested by recent literature.
This 3-day workshop was a culmination of dedicated work by 70 international clinician-scientists working in three teams under the guidance of three chairpersons. There were also professional member dental organizations represented, including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), and the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP).
Participants discussed three questions for the Summit, each researched and presented by one of three working groups. Framed around outcomes or impact on long-term osseointegration, the questions addressed: Primary Stability and Osseointegration (Group 1); Inflammation and Osseointegration (Group 2); and Systemic Health, Medications, and Osseointegration (Group 3).
Following the meeting, the outcomes of the debates were incorporated into the final three papers published in this special supplemental edition of JOMI as a service to the AO membership. Thank you to all of the experts who worked very hard in preparing for this Summit and the AOF and Corporate friends of the AO who supported this important contribution to patient care.
Academy of Osseointegration Expands Current Clinical Practice Guidelines to Include Management of the Edentulous Maxilla
The edentulous maxilla often presents with a range of challenges and solutions that can be difficult for individual clinicians to navigate. To help them make choices that best utilize current research ‒ and improve the quality and efficiency of patient care ‒ AO has expanded its current clinical practice guidelines to include management of the edentulous maxilla.
To arrive at these Guidelines, in August 2014 AO hosted a Consensus Summit that brought together 120 of the world’s leading scientists and clinicians ‒ including representatives from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons College of Prosthodontists (AAOMS), the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) ‒ to conduct a systematic review of the current literature, clinical information and accepted treatment approaches for management of the edentulous maxilla. Summit co-chairs were Clark Stanford, DDS, PhD and Ole T. Jensen, DDS, MS.
The Guidelines cover five domain areas defined as: 1) role of grafting for ridge development for implant placement; 2) role of implant design and systems in management of the edentulous maxilla; 3) role of imaging to guide implant placement; 4) role of biologics to assist in ridge development; and 5) role of prosthetic management.
