2024 Presentations

Julie McLean, PhD

As Director of Publications and Clinical Value Demonstration for LifeNet Health, Dr. McLean will be discussing allograft processing methods for safety and efficacy. Not all tissue banks use the same processing methods, and different methods may lead to differences in safety as well as clinically relevant properties, such as osteoinductivity. Dr. McLean will provide an overview of why processing matters.

Dr. McLean supports scientific communication, publications, and medical education pertaining to the scientific and clinical evidence for allografts in a wide variety of applications including orthopedic surgery, wound management, reconstruction surgery, and dental and craniomaxillofacial procedures.

Dr. McLean’s diverse background includes a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine from Eastern Michigan University and a PhD in Physiology from The University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Her previous research experience includes benchtop examination of mitochondrial contribution to disease-driven skeletal muscle wasting and pre-clinical research on hemostatic agents to treat combat trauma injuries. She is an author on over 22 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.

While technologic excellence in implant dentistry continues to advance, the business environment of the implant surgery practice is also changing at a phenomenal pace as more practitioners are performing implant surgery. Along with a significant increase in the number of patients seeking treatment, there are more patients with significant osseous defects and deficiencies that provide an extra challenge to treatment modalities. Many viable treatment protocols have evolved to “work around” these challenges, such as Zygomatic implants, narrow implants, and “all on x” treatments with angled implants. In the end, however, many patients still benefit or require regeneration of hard and soft tissues to provide the best potential long-term results of their specific implant therapy.

Robert Miller, DMD

Guided Bone Regeneration has become an integral part of implant dentistry over the past three decades. This presentation will focus on the unique role Snoasis Medical’s proprietarily processed Dehydrated De-epithelialized Amnion-Chorion Membrane (ddACM) plays in both simultaneous dental implant placement as well as a staged approach. A comprehensive review of the allograft and a decision tree will be presented making the decision-making process seamless when evaluating the defect for simultaneous implant placement with predictable GBR. Participants will gain a unique understanding of a predictable approach to placement of dental implants in deficient sites with the long-term results demonstrating the overall efficacy of the methodology.

Dan Cullum, DDS

Minimally invasive implant techniques are enhanced with Dehydrated De-epithelialized Amnion Chorion Membrane (ddACM) and related technologies will be discussed with a focus on defect management, immediate molar implants and advanced crestal sinus elevation techniques. CBCT diagnosis and treatment planning will demonstrate advanced applications of ddACM based on the residual bone and soft tissue anatomy, avoiding complications and surgeon preference. Participants will gain understanding to develop advanced skills utilizing minimally invasive techniques for predictable patient centered outcomes!

Bone Grafting Concepts for Full Arch Implant Reconstruction: Is It Needed?

Full arch dental implant reconstruction is a viable treatment choice for patients who are edentulous or who have teeth that are compromised and in need of extraction. Regardless of a free-hand or fully guided surgical protocol, treatment outcomes for full arch implant supported restorations have helped patients regain proper function, aesthetics, and quality of life. Additionally, the ability to place implants immediately after tooth extraction has become a viable treatment modality which can often reduce the time to deliver functional restorations. However, the residual alveolar ridge may require grafting to fill defects left by extraction sockets, or pre-existing concavities. It is well understood that there are differences in bone volume when extraction sites are not grafted. Alveolar ridge preservation is an effective therapy to attenuate the dimensional reduction of the alveolar ridge that normally takes place after tooth extraction. The gold standard has always been autologous tissue harvested from the patient, which is not always easy or readily accessible. Therefore, most clinicians currently utilize bone and membranes available through tissue banks. Current innovations have fortunately provided a new previously untapped source for this autologous tissue, the extracted tooth which is often readily available when full arch implant reconstruction is planned. This current presentation will demonstrate why grafting is important for full-arch reconstruction, the use of various membrane types which aid in healing, and that it is also possible to provide enough grafting material volume to fill all residual sockets and concavities from extracted teeth harvested during immediate implant placement for a dual-arch surgical procedure.

Dan Holtzclaw, DDS, MS
Zygomatic and Pterygoid Implants for Full Arch Immediate Load Reconstruction with Deepithelialized Dehydrated Amnion-Chorion Allograft Adjunct

This lecture will offer a comprehensive overview of immediate load full arch reconstruction of the atrophic maxilla, including pterygoid and zygomatic implant utilization. Adjunctive use of amnion-chorion allograft membrane (BioXclude®) in these cases will testify to the versatility and unique handling advantages for every aspect of surgery, including: Schneiderian membrane repair and reinforcement, graft containment, as an adhesion barrier, and an overall carrier of growth factors and cytokines. The inherent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory nature of BioXclude adds to the numerous offered advantages in these applications.

Complications in Digital Dentistry: What Can Happen and How to Fix It

Unfortunately, there is no easy button in digital dentistry. The concept of just hitting “design, scan, print, mill, etc.” and receiving perfect outcomes is fundamentally flawed as each of these concepts requires the learning of new knowledge and skills. During this presentation, we will examine the common problems in each of these areas and where possible, practical ways to overcome them. We will also look at the recent advancements in digital technology, including full arch workflows and how we can now treat complex cases more predictably and efficiently.

Rodrigo Neiva, DDS, MS
Form with Function: Current Standards in Tissue Development and Tooth Replacement

Historically, alveolar ridge preservation and development have focused on volumetric changes with little tissue quality. The aim of this presentation is to discuss possible advantages, disadvantages, and realistic short- and long-term expectations of traditional methods of alveolar ridge development for implant therapy and to discuss potential advantages and limitations of new techniques and materials designed to maximize tissue quality.
