Academy of Osseointegration and American Academy of Periodontology Release Landmark Consensus on Prevention and Management of Peri-Implant Diseases

Arlington Heights, IL., August 13, 2025

The Academy of Osseointegration (AO) is excited to announce the publication of significant findings from the joint AO/AAP Consensus Conference on Prevention and Management of Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. The comprehensive findings, published in both the Journal of Periodontology and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants, provide clinicians worldwide with evidence-based protocols for treating patients with peri-implant diseases.

The consensus conference held Aug. 14-16, 2024, in Oak Brook, Illinois, brought together 46 of the world’s leading experts in implant dentistry to address the growing challenge of peri-implant diseases. With the exponential increase in dental implant use, these conditions have become a notable concern affecting implant therapy success and patient quality of life.

The consensus represents a comprehensive analysis of peri-implant disease prevention and management based on expert panel review of thousands of scientific reports to provide clinicians with evidence-based recommendations.

The conference was co-chaired by Hom-Lay Wang, who holds DDS, MS and PhD degrees, representing the Academy of Osseointegration and Paul Rosen, DMD, MS, representing the American Academy of Periodontology. The year-long preparation process involved rigorous scientific analysis, including eight commissioned systematic reviews and meta-analyses that underwent peer review.

Key Findings and Recommendations:
The consensus generated an evidence-based flow diagram that emphasizes early risk factor identification, tailored treatment protocols and continued maintenance to optimize long-term implant therapy outcomes. The expert panels were divided into two primary groups:

  • Group 1: Risk Factors, Indicators and Determinants of Peri-implantitis
  • Group 2: Management of Peri-implantitis and Other Implant-related Complications

The findings demonstrate potential benefits from surgical treatment approaches for peri-implantitis management, based on the systematic review process conducted by expert panels.

The conference included diverse expertise from general dentists, periodontists, prosthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and other professionals involved in implant-related science and clinical practice. Editors from implant-related scientific journals worldwide also participated in the deliberations.

The consensus conference involved vigorous debates among experts who thoroughly examined every aspect of the science. The resulting recommendations are expected to impact clinical practice by providing both scientific evidence and expert opinion to clinicians treating peri-implant diseases.

The consensus conference represents a collaborative effort between two premier organizations dedicated to advancing implant dentistry. Non-voting observers representing various dental organizations, scientific publishers and implant manufacturers were available to provide clarifications when requested by the expert panels.
