AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry - FAQ

Why is AO initiating such a program?
The Academy of Osseointegration (AO) has implemented this program to offer its membership a credentialing process to recognize the level of implant dentistry accomplishment among its membership. This is a direct result of addressing the membership requests. A certificate in dental implant dentistry provides membership benefit for all.

Who reviews the certificate applications and how long does the review process take?
The review process involves calibrated committee members who assess the requirements of the applicant relative to training, continuing education, meeting attendance, and membership status. In addition, the four cases submitted with each application will be reviewed with specific guidelines for assessment (see Evaluation Assessment Worksheet). Committee members will be assigned to focus on either the surgical or restorative aspect of the application. Please allow 2-4 weeks for review of completed applications.

Are there different application requirements for AO members outside the U.S.?
No. AO members from all countries are required to follow the same submission criteria and procedures. All applications must be completed in English.

Are there different application requirements for specialists and general practitioners?
No.

How do I send the application forms and image files electronically?
To send documents online, either send through www.dropbox.com (or another comparable file sharing site) or as a compressed zip file not to exceed 5MB.

If my application is considered incomplete by the approval committee, how long do I have to submit subsequent documentation or re-apply?
Should an application be denied as incomplete, applicants will be notified and given 30 days to complete and resubmit the application and/or appropriate documentation.

Will the privacy and anonymity of the patients featured in my application be protected?
Patient HIPPA privacy should be adhered to with NO PATIENT IDENTIFICATION included in any written text or photo images. All application submissions are kept in strict confidence and only seen by the reviewing committee members.

How will the awardees of the AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry be recognized?
All awardees will receive recognition at a special ceremony at the Annual Meeting, where they are presented with the AO Certificate and lapel pin. Photographs of each awardee will be featured in Academy News, announced to industry media channels, and featured on the AO’s website and relative online distribution.

Once I am awarded the AO Certificate, do I have to re-apply to maintain the Certificate status?
No, to maintain the Certificate status, an AO Certificate holder is asked to attend three (3) Annual Meetings every five (5) years and remain an AO member in good standing.

If my application is not approved for the AO Certificate, am I allowed to contest the decision to deny status?
AO members who are not approved for AO Certificate status have the right to a formal rebuttal process and it must be done within ten (10) days from the time of receipt of denial from the committee. should the member wish to reapply, the application submission must be received within six (6) months.

Do post-graduate students qualify?
Yes, they may submit cases completed in the post-graduate programs.
