Dr. Paolo Vigolo receives William R. Laney Award for best scientific dental journal article
Arlington Heights, Ill., March 14, 2018 – Italian prosthodontist Paolo Vigolo, DMD, MSD was bestowed with the William R. Laney Award by the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) at its 2018 Annual Meeting.
“Internal- vs External-Connection Single Implants: A Retrospective Study in an Italian Population Treated by Certified Prosthodontists” was the award-winning research conducted by Dr. Vigolo and his research team consisting of active members of the Italian Academy of Prosthetic Dentistry (AIOP). The award recognizes the best article published in the past year in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI), the official publication of AO.
Dr. Vigolo and his team were honored for their five-year clinical study aimed at establishing whether different clinical outcomes could be detected for external- or internal-connection implants and evaluate the results for a large number of single implants restored by certified prosthodontists. According to Dr. Vigolo, the design of an implant connection that allows suprastructures to be attached to implants has long been debated in dental literature. For this retrospective clinical study, all single implants with internal or external connections inserted in 27 private dental practices from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2007 were evaluated.
An initial statistical analysis was performed to describe the sample population at baseline and then to compare the two types of implant-abutment connection configuration and their clinical outcomes. Twenty-eight of the 85 active members of the AIOP participated in this study.
As a result of his award-winning research, Dr. Vigolo was provided the opportunity to provide a 20- minute presentation at the Clinical Innovations Session during AO’s 2018 Annual Meeting.
“I am truly honored to receive this prestigious award and I want to express my sincere thanks to the Academy of Osseointegration’s William R. Laney Award Committee. I also would like to thank all 27 AIOP Active Members for their remarkable involvement in this research project.”
The award is named after the William R. Laney, DMD, MS, AO’s first president and former editor of JOMI a publication in which he serves as Editor Emeritus.
“The evaluation of all articles this year involved multiple members of the committee in an extremely competitive process,” said Dr. Ole Jensen, chair of AO’s William R. Laney Award Committee and an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in Greenwood Village, CO.
“Dr. Vigolo and colleagues undertook examination of a clinically significant question in a well designed study, their findings and report exemplary of JOMI and Academy of Osseointegration excellence and progress in implant dentistry.”
