AO membership offers world-wide networking and continuing education opportunities

The Academy of Osseointegration is recognized as the premier association for professionals interested in implant dentistry. It has always been at the forefront of scientific advances in dental implant and tissue replacement therapy. Because its membership is international, with members from more than 70 countries, AO offers the unique advantage of sharing information on a worldwide basis.

The organization fosters the dissemination of knowledge to all disciplines and promotes developments in tissue replacement therapies in oral and facial care. The multidisciplinary make-up of the membership encourages dental professionals from the various specialties, as well as general practitioners, research scientists, academicians, laboratory technicians and other ancillary personnel to come together in a learning experience that provides a refreshing opportunity for an interdisciplinary approach.

Applicants for Active or Affiliate Member status must enclose the following:

  • Complete application
  • Payment or application fee and first year dues (see application form)
  • One of the following documents must be submitted (applicants for Active Membership only): copy of diploma, dental license, certificate of specialty, or copy of Board Certification

What steps are involved to become a Fellow?

The first step in becoming a Fellow in the Academy of Osseointegration is to join the Academy as an Active Member. Individuals may not enter the Academy as a Fellow. If you are already a member of the Academy, you may be ready to apply for Fellowship. If you believe that you qualify for the Fellowship, please complete the Application for Fellowship. Once received, the Executive office will verify your data and forward your application to the Fellowship and Certificate Committee for evaluation.

The following prerequisites are required of applicants:

  • Applicant must be a qualified DMD/DDS/PhD or equivalent, with a minimum of ten (10) years, actively involved in dentistry, in either a clinical or research setting or working in an implant-related academic position for a minimum of three (3) days/week. (Excluding post-graduate training/research)
  • Applicant must be a member of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) for five (5) consecutive years.
  • Applicant must have attended a minimum of three (3) Academy of Osseointegration Annual Meetings within the last seven (7) years.
  • Applicant is required to provide supporting testimonials from two (2) current Fellows of the Academy of Osseointegration.

Application instructions:
A minimum of fifteen (15) points total is required for the application to qualify for Fellowship. There is no cross compensation of points between sections 1-3. However, if the required points within sections 1-3 are not met, points from section 4 can be applied to compensate for the difference. Applicants are responsible for providing and labeling all required and supporting documents. Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicant.

AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry (learn more)

The AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry provides an opportunity for AO members to demonstrate that they have attained a level of education and experience that verifies their core knowledge and clinical skills in the field of implant dentistry.

Membership Categories

Categories of membership are not permanent classifications. As experience is gained or education completed, an individual can apply or transfer one membership category to another. Active (learn more)

This category is open to any dental, physician or other basic scientist in implant dentistry.

Affiliate (learn more)

This membership category includes dental technicians, nurses, auxiliary personnel and technical representatives of manufacturing companies who have an interest in implant dentistry.

Student (learn more)

This category includes students or residents enrolled in dental school, medical school, pre-doctoral or post-doctoral advanced education programs.

Life Member (learn more)

Life Member status may be granted by a special vote of the Board of Directors. Individuals may not enter the Academy as Life Members.

Fellow

The Board of Directors may confer Fellowship status upon any Active Member who qualifies by service to the Academy.

Honorary Fellows

In recognition of their outstanding research and clinical investigations, Professors Per-Ingvar Brånemark, Andre Schroeder, Will Schulte, and George Zarb have been named Honorary Fellows of the Academy. Their pioneering scientific efforts in the field have been influential in the evolution of the science of osseointegration.
