Having completed a very successful Charter Chapter meeting in Tokyo, Japan in late July, under the leadership of Dr. Takashi Sumi, AO’s global reach will extend into the continent of Africa for the first time with plans for an outreach program at the international meeting of the Southern African Association of Osseointegration (SAAO) in Durban, South Africa, November 3-5, 2016.
AO’s first Charter Chapter Meeting in London, England, UK in September 2012 has now been followed by meetings in Tel Aviv, Israel (February 2014), a second UK meeting (July 2014), Milan, Italy (September 2014), Madrid, Spain (November 2014), Pune, India (January 2015), and Tokyo.
In addition, the Academy began sponsoring a symposium at the FDI’s Annual World Dental Congress with a program at the meeting in Istanbul, Turkey (August 2013). A symposium was also held at the DFI Annual World Congress in September 2014 (New Delhi, India) and another is planned for September 2016 (Bangkok, Thailand).
Attendance at the Japan Charter Chapter meeting, attracting almost 300 delegates, made it the best attended AO meeting run outside the North American continent. AO will organize and present an outreach session during SAAO’s second international conference, whose theme will be “Implantology, The Road Ahead.” The focus will be on new concepts that can lead to predictable treatment outcomes. The organizers say it will provide a good opportunity to promote the brand of AO and recruit additional membership from the expected 300-400 delegates attending.
The attractive venue chosen is the Conference Centre at the Elangeni Hotel on the beachfront in Durban, South Africa, conveniently situated on Durban’s Golden Mile, with close access to the newly renovated promenade extending from the Ushaka Marine World to the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The organizing committee is led by AO member Dr. John Bronner and includes SAAO President Dr. Blackie Swart, also an Academy member. AO’s Global Program Development Committee is now working on developing a new round of Charter Chapters.
